Maldives
In 2008, before the resort opened, an underwater trail was announced leading to the house reef at the northern end of the island, with submerged signs identifying the resident marine life. In Villingili, during the construction of the resort, the marine specialist relocated corals that could have been affected by the work and used them to create coral gardens close to the shoreline.
Villingili has its own turtle nesting area, marked off and protected. Green turtles periodically visit Villingili to lay their eggs on the sandy beach. The Villingili resort closed indefinitely in 2020.
