Maldives
In the lagoon of Hilton Maldives Amingiri, an artificial reef project was started in October 2022. Shelters made of sustainable, local material receive coral fragments broken by the waves on the outer reef, which are thus kept from being buried in sand. The project is led by the resident marine biologist Mohamed Abaan, known as 'Bunny'. The concept avoids generating CO2 through the production or transport of material: it is enough to offer shelter, and drifting fish larvae and eggs settle on the rough surfaces.
