The name Umm Aruk means "mother of coral towers", referring to the pinnacles that form a stone forest on the sandy bottom. Because of its many coral pillars, the site is also known as St Johns Woods, and the dive winds among dozens of isolated towers, as if through a grove.
There are many small pinnacles covered in very colourful corals, with reef fish and other marine creatures. The site is also used for night dives.
Umm Aruk tends to be dived throughout the year, and the water temperature usually ranges from 23 to 30 °C. The most recommended period tends to be from May to October.
