The Ilha Anchieta State Park was created in 1977 to protect the island and the ruins of the prison. The spot is sheltered from southeast, south and southwest winds. Several kinds of corals, moray eels and fish known locally as miriquitis live here. At Ilha Anchieta, the average water temperature is around 24 °C throughout the year and can reach 27 °C between February and March.
