On the more exposed northern side of Zabargad, dense forests of soft corals and fan corals grow. At the tip of the island there is a chance to see passing pelagics, schools of barracuda and reef sharks. In ancient times, the peridot crystals of Zabargad were unknowingly called "topaz", and the island was known as Topazos, Tropazios or Topazius; today it is called Zabargad or Saint John's Island. An ancient account, from around 50 BC, says that no unauthorized person could set foot on Zabargad, which was guarded by men who put to death anyone who approached.
