The Shams Alam Beach Resort house reef lies within Wadi El Gemal National Park, a protected area. More than 108 fish species have been counted there in a single hour.
To the north, lagoons and overhanging sections shelter many species and serve as nurseries in different seasons. In Middle Bay, the central, sandy part of the bay, five or six green sea turtles tend to appear almost every day. Pufferfish, boxfish and flounders also pass through Middle Bay.
In the north and south bays it is easy to spot the Bluecheek butterflyfish, the Red Sea anemonefish, the Coral hind (Cephalopholis miniata) and the Lionfish. In an undated observation, the corals of these two bays were in poor condition, with large bleached areas, but the marine life remained dense, with around a hundred species of reef fish, octopuses and other invertebrates.
