Shaab Rur Umm Gamar

The name Shaabruhr simply means “small reef”. This exposed reef has claimed at least three vessels, and on the southern plateau lie the remains of an Egyptian army supply vessel lost on her way to Shadwan Island. To the southeast, toward the drop-off, lies the scattered wreckage of a small Egyptian patrol boat, of which little remains but some debris and the engine. The safari boat Colona IV sank during a storm in 1995 and lies beyond the reach of recreational diving.

The reef was badly damaged by an outbreak of the crown-of-thorns sea star. On the plateau you may encounter morays, large groupers and blue spotted stingrays. The wall is full of crevices filled with glassfish, where scorpionfish, stonefish and crocodile fish hide, while eagle rays sometimes pass by. From the coral garden, looking out into the blue, you can see tunas, mackerels, trevallies and barracudas.

Shabruhr Umm Gamar is the type locality of the cone snail Isoconus kahlbrocki, described in 2019 from shells collected in the shell grit of the wall's crevices during trimix dives carried out in 2015.
