Egypt
Five old military pieces were sunk at Sha'ab El Sakala to create an artificial dive site. The Hurghada underwater museum was inaugurated in the region in September 2023, in a partnership between the government, the Egyptian Armed Forces and HEPCA. The museum's aim is to redirect Hurghada's large volume of diving away from coral reefs worn down by tourism.
Among the museum's vehicles are Soviet BRDM-2 armored vehicles and T-34-85 tanks, Egyptian Walid armored transports, an American M-60 Patton tank and several Spanish BMR-600s. In November 2023, divers saw tanks and also sunken police trucks at this site, with lots of fish around them, such as lionfish, anthias and blue spotted rays. Corals are already starting to grow and schools of fish are increasingly large around the sunken pieces.
