Pernambuco, Brazil
Built in 1955 at the Alssund shipyard, in Denmark, the Servemar X was a Wilson, Sons tugboat. After a year of preparation, diver Joel Calado and his school paid about R$ 13,000 to the company and, with all official permits, sank the Servemar X, the Minuano and the Lupus together, with the participation of the Fire Brigade, Ibama and the Pernambuco Port Authority. Cleaned of oil and other contaminants, the three were towed at dawn by a Wilson & Sons tug to the chosen site. The first of the three to sink, the Servemar X took about 1 hour 20 minutes to go down after its valves were opened; it listed at first, but returned to an upright position on its way to the bottom.
Although it was sunk on purpose, it keeps its structure and main parts: the name can still be seen painted on the hull, and the funnel still bears the emblem of the former company. Corals and sponges cover the vessel, which shelters schools of small tropical fish. In the Recife area, the best time to dive tends to run from October to March, peaking in December and January, when boat trips tend to be calmer.
