Pernambuco, Brazil
The Servemar was a Wilson, Sons tugboat and, later sold to a private owner, spent three years out of service, laid up and half-wrecked at one edge of the port of Recife. The hull, already badly deteriorated, was bought for about R$ 4,000 to become an artificial reef. After being cleaned of oil and other contaminants, it was towed by another tug provided by Wilson, Sons and deliberately sunk on 3 June 2004, about 9 km off Boa Viagem beach. The sinking was carried out by diver Joel Calado and his team, who in 2002 had already sunk the tugs Servemar X, Minuano and Lupus, and of the four the Servemar is the closest to shore.
The hull is packed with schools of small fish, and rays are often found, several of them hiding in the shadows between the hull and the bottom. On a dive in November 2022 there was also a school of spadefish. In the Recife area, the water tends to be calmer from September to December.
