Bombinhas, Santa Catarina, Brazil
It is said that Praia da Sepultura, in Bombinhas, was once called Praia da Embaixada and that its current name comes from the grave of an enslaved man who was reportedly killed in a fight in 1840 and buried on the beach.
On the seabed at Sepultura lies the underwater artwork “Bio Vida III”, by the visual artist Pita Camargo, and the Bombinhas city government intends to create an underwater gallery there. Near the sandy shoreline you can see sergeant majors, parrotfish, green turtles, seahorses and sea urchins. In 2013 and 2014, divers recorded the giant hermit crab Petrochirus diogenes and the crab Persephona mediterranea at the site.
In the region, the months from December to March are usually recommended for diving, with warmer water and more intense marine life. October and November are also usually recommended for diving along this coast, for the weather and the calm.
