Unlike the other pools in Atol das Rocas, Salão has a wide opening to the outer side of the reef ring. In 1999, 11 sponge species were recorded in Salão, whose composition formed a group of its own, apart from the other pools. In the atoll, green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting usually takes place from December to June, and 500 nesting events have been recorded in a single season.
