On 16 October 1908, the 7,887-ton British ship Velasquez struck the rocks of Ponta da Sela after leaving Santos on the Buenos Aires–New York route, carrying passengers and a cargo of coffee and mailbags. There were no casualties, and the castaways waited at Praia do Veloso until they were rescued the next day by the ship Milton. At the site, rays, turtles, lobsters and both passing and crevice-dwelling fish are frequently seen, along with many porkfish, damselfish and sergeant majors, while sponges and algae are scarce.
