On the sandy bottom of Saco da Aroeira there are mantis shrimp, which live in small holes. In the waters around Ilha Anchieta there are schools of mullet, snook, sardines and flying fish, as well as sea turtles.
The island's name was changed to Ilha Anchieta in 1934, as part of the tributes to the 400th anniversary of the birth of Father José de Anchieta. In 1977 the Parque Estadual da Ilha Anchieta was created, protecting the island and the ruins of the prison.
In the Ubatuba and Ilha Anchieta region, diving tends to be best from January to April. In early summer, thermoclines sometimes occur at the Ilha Anchieta sites, with bands of very cold water in the water column.
