Maldives
The RIU House Reef lies in an interior lagoon between Maafushi and Kedhigandu, connected to the sea, just 6 metres from the hotels.
The reef was created as a nursery for the Blue Reef Reforest programme, to restore the coral structure that used to exist in the lagoon by rehabilitating the 30 coral islets that make it up. Guests can adopt coral fragments. At the start of the programme, the RIU team attended training sessions given by the project's biologist and visits to the RIU House Reef.
RIU has worked with Blue Reef Reforest since 2022 and, since then, across the project as a whole, cultivated coral fragments have grown from 296 to more than 537, 431 have been transplanted and 20.4 m² of reef have been restored. In Dhaalu and Faafu atolls, reef sharks, turtles, eagle rays and schools of reef fish tend to appear year round, and manta rays from January to April.
