Brazil
About 500 m from the beach, an extensive coral barrier forms natural pools where free diving is also practiced. The corals form landscapes with small caves and crevices, and lobsters, tropical fish and various invertebrates are the main attractions. The coastline between Tamandaré and Paripueira, in Alagoas, was turned by the federal government into the APA Costa dos Corais, a sustainable-use protected area. In Tamandaré, in agreement with the local community, a 400-hectare area known as Ilha da Barra was closed as a marine reserve and began to be monitored together with neighboring reefs.
