Brazil
Recifes de Guaratibas are two reefs that dry at low tide, 3.5 miles ENE of Ponta Guaratibas. The trip depends on the tide: the reef emerges at the low tides of the new moon and the full moon, and departures follow the tide table. With the reef exposed, you can walk on it, during a stop that lasts one to two hours, depending on the tide.
The reef's natural pools shelter sea turtles and a wide variety of colorful fish. On one trip to the reef, sea urchins, other small animals and many colorful fish were seen. Over about 160 years, the Guaratibas reefs, 7 km from the coast, had the greatest loss of area among the reefs studied in the Abrolhos region: 49%.
In the region, from July to November, humpback whales can also be spotted in the waters of Prado.
