Safaga, Red Sea, Egypt
Ras Atantur is a coastal headland north of Safaga town, dived from day boats out of Safaga port. The site features a sloping reef wall descending from the surface to a sandy bottom at 30 metres, with hard coral cover, gorgonians on the deeper edge, and bommies on the surrounding sand. Resident species include anthias clouds, butterflyfish, parrotfish, lionfish, peacock groupers and giant moray eels. Turtles, eagle rays and the occasional whitetip reef shark are recorded. Currents are usually moderate. The site is suitable from Open Water level and is a popular check-out dive for divers heading to the more challenging offshore reefs. Visibility 20–25 metres typical.
