Brazil
The dive is not at the Funil itself: the Funil is upriver, where conditions are not recommended, and the dive site lies well below it, outside that area. The bottom has rock formations, a wall, strips of light sand, submerged logs and small caves. On sunny days, beams of light cross the water, and the site changes its look over the course of the day.
Raia, pirarara, piraíba, one of them bigger than the diver who came across it, jaú among the rocks and many cuiú-cuiús have been seen there, and botos appear at the surface. The presence of these animals, however, is not guaranteed. This stretch is heavily fished, and abandoned nets, cast nets, lines and longlines can entangle divers. There is also boat and jet ski traffic, and the site is marked with a buoy.
In Tocantins, from May to August the river tends to drop in the dry season and expose the sand strips. The official beach season usually takes place in June, July and August, when stalls and sound systems are usually set up on the sandbank.
