Ponte de Rifaina

The Ponte de Divisa was built by Cemig as a compensatory measure for the Jaguara power plant, under a 1968 agreement with the state of São Paulo, to replace the stretch of road affected by the damming of the Rio Grande. It links Rifaina (SP), via the SP-334 highway, to Sacramento (MG), via the MG-428 highway. Construction of the plant began in the 1960s and the first generator went into operation in 1970; with the reservoir, inhabited areas near the river were submerged. In the region, the damming flooded houses, brickworks, iron structures and bridges of old Rifaina, which can now be seen on dives.

In the area of the bridge there are submerged attractions, such as statues of Christ and of Our Lady of Aparecida and typewriters. The religious statues on the bottom of the reservoir were placed there after the flooding and serve as reference points on dive routes.

The reservoir has schools of mandis, tucunarés and tilápias, but above all large trairões. At the Rifaina dive sites there are also fish such as traíra, tilápia and lambari, as well as crustaceans and molluscs.
