Brazil
'Pontal' is the name for the strip of sand that juts out into the sea, and there, with the tide close to 0 m, a shallow, crystal-clear natural pool forms. The scene contrasts with the rest of Praia do Cupe, where swimming is discouraged in some stretches because of the strength of the sea. At high tide the pools disappear, the strip of sand almost vanishes and waves may appear at the Pontal.
At low tide lots of fish appear, and many small colorful fish get trapped in the pools between the reefs; a little farther out, other pools shelter schools of fish. Small crustaceans can also be seen in the pools, and there are sea urchins on the reefs. Some people offer underwater photos in the Pontal's natural pool.
