Poço do Lima is part of the Sistema Lapa Doce, in Iraquara, which, like many caves in the municipality, was first used to supply water to the local population. The system's cavities were only officially explored by speleologists in 1986, during a French-Brazilian expedition. In June and July 2021, a cave diving expedition passed through a tricky underwater passage and linked Lapa Doce 1 and Lapa Doce 2 for the first time, also connecting the northern section through the Jorge Lima siphon.
In the pool itself, an unprecedented dive exploring submerged conduits was filmed by a television channel. To get there, you walk down a trail with a 75 m drop to the cave entrance. Near the pool, the marks left by the river that floods into the cave during rainy periods are clearly visible, and the formations resemble snowflakes inside a frozen lake.
