Brazil
Poço da Camisa lies inside a collapse sinkhole, formed when the roof of a limestone cave fell in. The walls are almost vertical, and an opening lets beams of sunlight reach the water. The water tends to be turquoise blue and crystal clear in the dry season and tends to shift to emerald green in the rainy season.
In March 2026, an expedition of eight explorers, including technical divers and vertical-technique specialists, went to the sinkhole to advance the underwater exploration of the system. Side passages and the absence of a defined bottom indicate that the system may be much more extensive and complex than what has been explored so far.
The origin of the name is unproven and exists in more than one version. In one of them, a cowboy is said to have disappeared and his shirt to have been found caught on a branch near the sinkhole, and variations of this story speak of a jaguar attack, a fall from his horse or a murder. Another version attributes the name to a traveler who was passing through and is said to have disappeared, leaving only his shirt hanging on a branch.
