The Saco da Piraquara de Fora receives, through a tunnel, the cooling water of the Angra nuclear power plant, and the warmest part of this discharge reaches 8 °C above the surrounding seawater. In the visual censuses carried out from 2006 to 2008 on the rocky shores of the Saco da Piraquara de Fora, the five most abundant fish species were Eucinostomus argenteus, Haemulon steindachneri, Abudefduf saxatilis, Haemulon aurolineatum and Mugil curema. Calcareous algae of the genus Amphiroa were found only on the two rocky shores closest to the plant's warm-water outlet. In the Angra region, diving usually takes place all year round, with the water averaging 23 °C.
