Brazil
Pedra Nova is among the main dive sites of the Parque Estadual Marinho da Pedra da Risca do Meio, alongside Pedra da Botija and Pedra da Risca do Meio itself. The park was created by State Law No. 12,717 of September 5, 1997. Fishermen call the park's rock formations “riscas” or “cabeços”, and since the protected area lies in the central part of the area, it was named “Pedra da Risca do Meio”.
At Pedra Nova there are several rocks with sponges, parrotfish, moray eels and pufferfish, and the rock is covered with small schools of fish. It is also home to turtles, including a large turtle that divers often see. The angelfish Holacanthus ciliaris and Pomacanthus paru and the butterflyfish Chaetodon striatus have also been recorded at the site. Across the park as a whole, studies have recorded 131 fish species.
In Fortaleza, the most favorable months for diving tend to be January to June, a period with little wind.
