Pedra da Risca do Meio, also known as Pedra do Urubu, is a rock with a large crevice and gave its name to the state marine park. The name comes from the jangada fishermen of Ceará, who called the submerged rock formations "riscas" and named the fishing grounds Risca do Mar, Risca do Meio and Risca de Terra. In March 2011, a plaque about the creation of the park was installed at the site, honoring two pioneering divers from the state who fought for its creation.
A high diversity of marine sponges has been observed in the park, including two new species never before described by science.
In Fortaleza, the most favorable months for diving tend to be January to June, a period with little wind. In the second half of the year, strong winds tend to make navigation to the park difficult.
