Brazil
Parcel do Carpinteiro is an ancient Pleistocene shoreline, now drowned by the sea. The old beaches were covered by the water and cemented by carbonate, forming beachrock and coquinas. The parcel is made up of three sets of outcrops: Cabeço do Norte, Cabeço do Meio and Cabeço do Sul.
The coquina and sandstone ledges are colonized by encrusting corals, bryozoans, sponges, polychaetes, molluscs and crustaceans, as well as coralline algae. Rock-boring organisms are abundant, and the substrate also hosts the fauna associated with these encrusting communities.
In 2004 the parcel was proposed as a geological site candidate for World Heritage status. In 2007 the proposal was cancelled, since it is a submerged elevation 30 km from the coast with no conservation mechanism in place.
