Brazil
The Porto Alegre was a passenger-cargo ship, launched on 12/10/1889 by the R & W Hawthorn, Leslie & Co Ltd shipyard in Hebburn, England. She had a steel hull, 1490 gross register tons, twin screws and a speed of 11.5 knots. Records of the sinking disagree: one lists a packet ship lost in 1905 at Cabo de Santa Maria, another a steamer lost in 1906 at Cabo de Santa Marta.
Today the Porto Alegre and the Catalão are the wrecks lying at Praia do Cardoso. The hull is almost entirely buried: part of the superstructure can still be seen, and little of the deck and the bow.
In the 19th century, shipwrecks were frequent along the coast between Laguna and Jaguaruna, mainly because of the Laje da Jagua, which earned Cabo de Santa Marta its reputation as a ship graveyard.
