The Harlingen was a British steam cargo ship built in 1905 by W. Gray & Co. in West Hartlepool. On 28 October 1906 she left Buenos Aires in ballast bound for Port Eads, in the United States, with 25 crew. The news reached the Rio Port Authority by telegram from the lighthouse keeper on Ilha de Cabo Frio, and the crew lowered the boats and headed for the town of Cabo Frio. Amidships lies the engine block on its side, with its three pistons still visible, and near it are three boilers about 4 m in diameter, whose furnaces are home to many fish. At the bow there are three Hawkins anchors, the port one still in its hawsepipe. Ten metres from the stern, a four-bladed propeller rests on pieces of iron, and at the stern another giant propeller, possibly the spare, lies on the sand.
