Brazil
Unidentified, the hull earned the nickname Vapor das Crioulas. One unconfirmed hypothesis is that it is the Brazilian steamer Diligente, which was sailing from Caravelas (BA) to Rio de Janeiro with passengers and mailbags and sank on 24/02/1875 after striking the northeast point of the Ilhas Maricás. This paddle steamer is estimated to have been built between 1830 and 1870. The paddle wheels appear to have been removed before the sinking, because the hubs have regular outlines with no signs of breakage.
In 2005, a team of divers from Rio de Janeiro searched for the wreck using a mark passed on by spearfishers, but did not find it. The hull was located on 20/11/2011, after two expeditions, by a team from a dive school in Niterói together with the divers André Domingues, Eduardo Davidovich and Fabio Conti, using a mark that also came from local spearfishers. This team used side-scan sonar and rebreather divers, and shared the position soon after the discovery.
Many fishing nets are caught on the wreckage, because trawl fishermen frequent the area. What remained of the hull's exposed wood has been degraded by the sea.
