Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The steamer Bezerra de Menezes left the port of Angra on 2 February 1891 with 37 passengers and 24 crew and, at 11 p.m., struck the Colombo reef, today Laje Alagada. The cause of the accident is attributed to the captain's lack of skill. The impact tore a hole in the bow and the ship sank quickly, but there were no victims: the steamer Daunfleu rescued the passengers and crew, along with much of the cargo, and took them to Sepetiba. Two partly buried boilers can still be seen and, at the stern, the propeller hub without its blades, the rudder and parts of the keel.
