Maldives
In the 1958 aerial photographs, the spur-and-groove formation of Addu's southern outer reef ran from Hitaddu to Midu. At Mulikolhoo Fara, a neighbouring site in the southeast of the atoll, there are still remains of the anti-submarine nets that crossed the channel during World War II.
On Addu's outer walls there are caverns and overhangs where green and hawksbill turtles, mantis shrimps, lobsters, whitetip reef sharks and nurse sharks rest. Curious schools of batfish, fusiliers and jackfish are also almost always found there.
On Addu's outer reefs, the 2016 El Niño (coral bleaching) caused major damage between 3 and 12 m. In the region, the period around the full or new moon tends to bring stronger currents, which attract more big fish.
