Safaga, Red Sea, Egypt
Middle Reef (Sha'ab El Awasta or simply 'Middle') is a small submerged reef midway between Safaga port and Tobia Arba'a, popular as a day-boat dive from Safaga and as part of multi-dive itineraries combining Salem Express, Panorama and Abu Kafan. The reef rises from a sandy bottom at 25 metres to a top at 5 metres, with hard coral cover dense on the plateau and bommies dotting the surrounding sand. Anthias clouds, butterflyfish, parrotfish, lionfish and the occasional crocodilefish are reliable; turtles and the occasional eagle ray pass. Currents are moderate. The site is suitable from Open Water level and is often paired with the Salem Express for a respectful afternoon dive. Visibility 20–25 metres typical.
