Makassar Reef (Karang Makassar) is the largest reef in Komodo National Park, extending approximately 3 km through the central channel. The shallow plateau of coral and sand, between 5 and 18 m, is dotted with permanent cleaning stations frequented by reef mantas (Mobula alfredi); in tidal conditions the currents become strong and the drift carries divers along the reef in the company of dozens of mantas.
