At the Maamoura site lie the remains of another stone pier, from approximately the same period as the Montaza pier, which is dated to the 1st century. Mamoura Bay was the gateway for ships coming from the Mediterranean on their way to the Canopic branch of the Nile. In the bay, potsherds and amphorae scattered on the bottom attest to many shipwrecks, and a survey found a Roman shipwreck. Excavations in the bay also found a small Greco-Roman port and paving, the limestone quarry used to build them, and rock-cut basins thought to be evidence of fish farming.
