Laje do Recreio is an extensive rock formation with many holes, where a variety of marine creatures live. The main ledge covers an area of 500 m by 80 m. Most visitors to the ledge go snorkeling, but scuba diving is also possible.
About 4 km toward Barra da Tijuca, another ledge holds the remains of the Workman wreck. The English steamer, bound for London, ran aground in mid-February 1913 on the line of rocks parallel to Barra da Tijuca beach and stayed stuck for weeks. During unloading, a storm with strong southwest winds broke the hull; almost all the crew were rescued by the tugboat Brasil, but two drowned.
