In Dhivehi, kandu means channel. The dive is a drift: the current carries divers from the western tip of Kinolhas along the north side of the island to a small thila. Experienced divers go down to the thila; beginners stay over the overhangs and slowly ascend the sandy slope.
There are stingrays, eagle rays, huge groupers and turtles, plus lots of fish and macro on the reef top.
In Raa Atoll you can dive all year, and the sea usually gets calmer during the northeast monsoon, from January to May. From May to November, the southwest monsoon usually makes the sea rougher, but that is when there is the best chance of seeing mantas and whale sharks in the region, particularly from August to November. In this rainy season, from June to November, the wind usually brings large plankton blooms, which attract the manta rays.
