Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil
Iuias, in the Mar de Fora of Fernando de Noronha, is a volcanic formation of ledges and walls covered by marine animals of many species, including sharks. The relief is striking, with rocks that form canyons and caves. Covered with corals, the formation has many crevices and passages that make up a sponge-lined labyrinth where schools of fish shelter.
Several types of fish and sharks are seen often, and passing pelagic fish are common. On a dive in December 2010, lobsters out of their dens, moray eels, a huge stingray (raia-prego), schools of pirajiba fish and a turtle were seen. Its varied marine life makes the site appreciated by underwater photographers.
Sea conditions at Iuias tend to be best from March to May, when the Mar de Fora is regularly diveable. Across Noronha as a whole, the sea tends to be calmer from September to November.
