Brazil
Ilha do Pai is the island farthest from Praia de Itaipu and has a different rock formation from the islands of Mãe and Menina. Its slope is greater and its shoreline steeper, which gives the dive a very different profile from the neighboring islands, and drift diving is possible. Marine life around the island includes small fish, green turtles, rays and, if you are lucky, morays.
The islands of Pai, Mãe and Menina are listed as protected natural heritage for their importance to the landscape of the Rio de Janeiro state coast. Lined up together, the three islands shelter the Itaipu cove, and the rocky reefs associated with them are important habitats where biodiversity gathers, with benthic life and reef fish. In the region, the Itaipu Marine Extractive Reserve was created by State Decree 44.417 of 30 September 2013 to protect traditional artisanal fishers and the local natural resources.
