Arraial do Cabo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Ponta Sul, on Ilha dos Porcos, is a site well suited to underwater photography. It is sheltered when the northeast wind blows, which prevails in the region.
On one reported dive at Ponta Sul, moray eels and turtles were seen. Seahorses (Hippocampus reidi) have also been recorded at the site, with more males than females. Ilha dos Porcos is one of the places where green turtles are monitored, to understand how free diving affects their behavior.
On this coast, the Arraial do Cabo upwelling tends to come with the spring and summer wind pattern, and it usually reaches this area only for short periods.
The reported dive took place at 8–12 m; 12 m is the maximum observed on that route, not a universal maximum. An indicative historical table lists visibility of 5–25 m without establishing current conditions.
Information on this page, including technical data such as depth, current, visibility, access, and recommended level, is informational and may vary. Confirm actual conditions with a local operator before the dive.
