Between the 9th and 15th centuries, Gubal Island was a stop on trade and pilgrimage routes and served as a lookout post and fortification, thanks to its position at the entrance to the Gulf of Suez. Some operators run Big Gubal as a drift dive. Underwater, the site has an eel garden. In the Gubal area diving usually goes on all year round; the best time is usually from May to October, and February tends to have cooler water and air.
