In Laamu, manta rays are sighted all year round, and sightings historically peak from May to June and from October to November. In December 2021, an ocean area in Gaadhoo and the turtle nesting beach in Gaadhoo were declared protected. In this region, the waters near Gaadhoo are described as rich in megafauna, including endangered turtles, manta rays and sharks.
