The nickname Camel Reef, or Erg Camel, comes from its shape: viewed from the east, the reef resembles a lying camel. The pinnacles are carpeted in coral, with colorful soft corals predominating, along with some gorgonians and hard corals. Soft coral and anthias cover the erg, and schools of glassfish shelter in the caverns and cracks, stalked by scorpionfish and lionfish. Crocodilefish take refuge under table corals, and moray eels swim around the peaks alongside schooling fish. The reef also has small caves, and barracudas can cruise by.
