Erg Abu Diab is known for encounters with big sharks: divers often meet groups of hammerhead sharks, and gray sharks and thresher sharks are also likely to appear. There is a chance to see big fish in groups and soft corals. The fish found at the site include surgeonfish and butterflyfish; lionfish hide in the cracks and sergeant majors occasionally pass by in the blue. The reef, about 130 m long, lies far from the usual routes and is therefore of little interest to liveaboards.
