El Aruk Aruk Giftun

The El Aruk erg field looks like a field of mushrooms and is divided into three sites, Aruk Diana, Aruk Giftun and Aruk Gigi; Aruk Giftun consists of seven ergs standing on a stony seabed. One of the smaller ergs has a grotto full of glassfish, lionfish and scorpionfish. With so many pinnacles in the area, it is easy to lose your sense of direction; without a compass, you can take your bearings from the current or the angle of the sun, or stay with two or three ergs without wandering off. On the pinnacles near Big Giftun, copper sweepers hide in the crevices and groups of lionfish sometimes attack smaller fish.
