Sharm El Sheikh, South Sinai, Egypt
The Ras Mohammed Eel Garden is a sandy plateau north of Ras Ghozlani where a colony of several hundred spotted garden eels (Heteroconger hassi) emerges from the seabed at 14–18 metres, swaying like sea grass. Approached slowly, the colony tolerates divers within a few metres before retracting. The surrounding sand hosts blue-spotted ribbontail rays, peacock flounders and the occasional crocodilefish, while the adjacent reef edge hosts hard coral patches with anthias, butterflyfish and the Red Sea bannerfish (Heniochus intermedius). Currents are typically mild and the site is suitable from Open Water level. Visibility 25 metres. Ras Mohammed National Park no-touch and no-anchor rules apply.
