La Cueva del Pargo (The Snapper Cave) off Playa del Carmen, with a huge circular overhang teeming with schools of snappers at depths of 6 to 13 meters and weak currents. A bronze statue shaped like a giant shell rests between the two parts of the reef, and the abundant macro life - octopuses, cleaner shrimp and urchins - attracts photographers and beginners.
