Brazil
Costão do Sudoeste is on Ilha Montão de Trigo, whose name, given by the Portuguese, comes from its mound-like shape, which resembles a heap of wheat and can be seen from the mainland. The site's attraction is exploring the countless caves, chambers, holes and passages formed by large boulders along the rocky shore.
Around Montão de Trigo there are floating fish traps and gillnets from traditional caiçara artisanal fishing, and divers should keep away from them.
In the region, summer tends to be the best season, with warmer water, although there is good diving all year round. Around the islands off the southern coast of São Sebastião, the water averages close to 22°C over the year and can reach 27°C between mid-January and the arrival of autumn. Occasionally, in early summer, thermoclines may occur, bands of extremely cold water in the water column.
