Brazil
Costão das Estátuas is named after statues placed on the bottom by dive operators, and two of them mark the entrance to the largest grotto at the site. The discovery of two grottoes was reported on Ilha dos Búzios, and divers later explored and documented them.
Ilha dos Búzios is home to a traditional caiçara community that lives from artisanal fishing and from growing cassava and bananas. On the boat ride to the Búzios archipelago it is common to see bottlenose dolphins, Bryde's whales and even humpback whales.
In the region, the water averages around 22 °C over the year and can reach 27 °C from mid-January until the arrival of autumn. In early summer, thermoclines, bands of very cold water in the water column, can occur in the region.
