Brazil
Among the less conventional dives at Ilha do Arvoredo are caves that form a world apart to be explored. Above water, Ilha do Arvoredo is covered almost entirely by Atlantic Forest, with a great diversity of land plants and animals. The Brazilian Navy keeps an English lighthouse dated 1883 on Arvoredo, an important landmark for vessels.
Underwater, Ilha do Arvoredo brings together schools of fish, turtles, lobsters, seahorses, some corals and, more rarely, rays. At the island's sites you may also see a variety of fish, along with an unusually large number of sea turtles. The region's protected area safeguards threatened species such as the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the Atlantic goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara), the dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) and the black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci).
Along this coast, the water tends to be warmer between December and March, when it rises to 22 to 25 °C.
